Kendricks and built by G. P. Pearson at a cost of $4853.00. (Courtesy of the Griffith Historical Society) Above is Franklin School, which opened in 1911, and secondary/high school classes began in 1912. The handwritten date on the original photo is 1914. This was Griffith's only public school for about 50 years. All that remains of the original building is the cornerstone which is part of the current Franklin School. (Courtesy of the Govert Family and Griffith Historical Society) Above is an early photo of the Govert Family, circa 1900. Front row from left to right are: George, Joe, William Peter, Cecilia, Anna (holding Harry), Charlie May and his mother, Mary Govert May Pfaneuf. Back row left to right: Kate, John, Henry and William. The older gentleman who is seated is William Peter Govert, who was elected to the very first Griffith Town Board which began their term in office in 1904. He was also the first President of the Griffith Town Board. Recognize the Govert house in the background? Go South on Broad Street across the railroad tracks, and see if you can spot the house on the right (West) side of S. Broad Street. |
